Hello.
My name is Mo, and this is my story with Portsmouth City of Sanctuary.
When I first arrived in Portsmouth in September 2023, I felt lost and alone. The city was unfamiliar, and I didn’t know a single person. Feeling the weight of my isolation, I sought a way to connect with others and make a positive impact. That’s when I found Portsmouth City of Sanctuary.
Driven by my own experiences of pain and need, I was determined to help others facing similar struggles. I began volunteering as an English Teacher Assistant and an Arabic Interpreter. This opportunity not only allowed me to assist those who needed help but also provided me with a sense of purpose and direction. From the very first day, I was welcomed with open arms. The warmth, acceptance, and support I received from the team were overwhelming. They guided me through every step and made sure I felt like a valued member of the community.
This positive environment had a profound impact on my mental health, lifting me from a state of poor mental well-being to one of hope and resilience. Volunteering with Portsmouth City of Sanctuary was a transformative journey. I acquired numerous new skills and gained invaluable insights from fellow volunteers. The emotional and mental rewards I experienced were beyond measure. Each day spent volunteering was a day of growth, learning, and connection.
Through this experience, I found more than just a volunteer opportunity; I found a community and a family. The bonds I formed with my Portsmouth City of Sanctuary family are unbreakable. They showed me that the real family is the one we choose, and I will always choose them.
Portsmouth City of Sanctuary changed my life in ways I never imagined. It gave me a sense of belonging, purpose, and the strength to continue helping others. For that, I am eternally grateful.
