Standing Together Against FGM

On FGM Zero Tolerance Day, Portsmouth took a bold and compassionate step forward.

For the first time, Portsmouth City of Sanctuary hosted a city-wide conference on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a powerful and necessary event led by our Chair, Shamila Dhana. The day, recognised by the United Nations, is a global call to action to end FGM and stand in solidarity with women and girls around the world.

Held with the support of key local partners including Stop Domestic Abuse, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, Biscoe’s Solicitors and the Advancement of Equality, Gender and Inclusion Studies (AEGIS), the conference brought together professionals, advocates, and community members to shed light on the devastating impact of FGM.

From legal protections to healthcare support, each speaker shared vital insights into the work being done across Portsmouth to support survivors and prevent future harm. Attendees learned about FGM Protection Orders, heard first-hand the role hospitals play in caring for women affected by FGM, and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of a united, city-wide response.

This historic event was more than a conference – it was a statement: Portsmouth will not stay silent. We will stand with survivors. We will educate, protect, and advocate together.
